Alagang Kapatid Foundation Inc. (AKFI) participated in the Metro Manila Shake Drill on Wednesday June 22, 2016. Being part of the North Quadrant, the team set up their “Disaster Response Center” at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City.

Government agencies, companies and NGOs checked in and started putting up their tents ready to give different modes of assistance.

Different scenarios were staged at the VMMC parking lot. At the first siren, people dropped on the ground, covered their heads and held their positions for seconds. When the second siren rang in the area, different rescue agencies took their positions and readied themselves to receive and treat injuries.

First responders administered first aid to minor injuries. Drill on how to extract trapped and injured victims were also done while there were rescuers from up the rooftop of a 4-storey building.

The “Disaster Response Center” set up by AKFI provided free calls via satellite phone which Smart Communications lent. Hanap Kapatid or on-line posting and search for families and relatives were also set up providing free wi-fi on site. One Meralco Foundation responder kit issued 2 units of portable generator sets for free charging and rechargeable solar lamps. Warm food was served and potable water from Maynilad quenched the thirst of the participants. Relief items from PLDT-Smart Foundation, One Meralco Foundation, Alagang Kapatid Foundation and De Los Santos Medical Center were also displayed as part of the services the team may provide in case the 7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Manila. Free transportation through PLDT-Smart Foundation fb van was also set up near the area.

At the end of the drill, nothing was more important than taking home knowledge and skills on readiness and survival should the West Valley Fault move with tremendous tremor.
